Joaquin Phoenix Decided NOT to Act Out One of Jesus' Miracles

Joaquin Phoenix portrays Jesus in the new movie, "Mary Magdalene."

During filming, Phoenix refused to perform one of Jesus' miracles that was in the Bible's Gospel of John.

Joaquin Phoenix decided last minute not to act out one of Jesus' miracles from John's Gospel. The miracle in question was where Jesus healed a blind man by rubbing mud in his eyes. The scene was actually portrayed by a woman in the scene.

Phoenix knew about the original story in The Bible, but said “When I got there, I thought, ‘I’m not going to rub dirt in her eyes. Who the f--- would do that?’ It doesn’t make any sense. That is a horrible introduction to seeing.”

Phoenix instead decided to lick his thumb and rubbed the woman's eyes. He believes that his way of "making the blind see" doesn't actually take away from the miracle that Jesus performed.

The movie, "Mary Magdalene," directed by Garth Davis, is about Jesus' life with one of his disciples, Mary Magdalene, who is played Rooney Mara, Phoenix's real-life girlfriend and is set to be released in the United States on Good Friday, April 19th, 2019.

The movie was originally released in 2017 around the world but was pushed back in the United States during Harvey Weinstein's sexual assault case.
