A fifth-grader at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, Raniya Wright, 10, died on Wednesday from injuries sustained during a fight with another fifth grade student a few days earlier on Monday. Authorities don't believe any weapons were used during the fight.

School staff members stopped the fight and dialed 911. Wright was collapsed, unconscious, but still breathing in the nurse's station when authorities arrived before she was transported by helicopter to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where she died later.

The other student in the fight was suspended.

An autopsy is scheduled for this Friday to determine the cause and manner of death.

Colleton County School District officials described Raniya as “a wonderful student” who loved playing basketball, writing and spending time with friends.
