Adopt Bonded Brothers Rufus & Bear Today!

Many of the animals featured by Helen Woodward Animal Center have overcome difficult beginnings. For Rufus and Bear, however, the hardest chapter of their lives may be the one they're living through right now.

Rufus first came to the Center as a kitten with special medical needs. Thanks to dedicated care and treatment, he quickly recovered and soon found what seemed to be his perfect forever home. With his striking orange coat and sweet personality, it’s easy to see why he stole hearts so quickly.

Not long after adopting Rufus, his family decided he needed a feline companion and welcomed Bear into the household from another rescue organization.

For the next two years, life was everything these cat brothers could have hoped for. They settled beautifully into their new home, formed an inseparable bond, and were deeply loved by their family.

Then, at the beginning of 2026, everything changed.

The family welcomed a newborn baby and looked forward to raising their child alongside Rufus and Bear. Unfortunately, they soon learned their infant suffered from a severe, life-threatening allergy to cats. Determined to keep everyone together, the family explored every possible solution. Despite their best efforts, nothing proved effective. After weeks of trying to make it work, they were forced to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender the cats they loved so dearly.

Given their good looks and wonderful temperaments, it seemed certain that new adopters would be lining up to meet them. Bear, a handsome Siamese mix, possesses the striking features that have made the breed so beloved. Rufus, a gorgeous long-haired orange tabby, is equally captivating. Beyond their appearance, both cats have incredible personalities.

Bear is the social butterfly of the pair, eagerly greeting new people and always ready for attention or playtime. Rufus is a bit more laid-back, preferring quiet evenings spent curled up beside his favorite humans. Together, they complement each other perfectly.

Yet months have passed, and the brothers remain in the Center's Cattery.

Day after day, they watch potential adopters walk by their enclosure. Many visitors are drawn to tiny kittens, overlooking the two adult cats patiently waiting for a second chance at a forever home. Despite their beauty, their bond, and their affectionate natures, Rufus and Bear continue to be passed by.

As a bonded pair, the brothers will remain together. They have shared their lives for years, providing comfort, companionship, and stability for one another through every challenge they've faced. Separating them would mean losing the one constant they've always had.

One of the greatest advantages of adopting adult cats is knowing exactly who they are. Their personalities are already developed, and what adopters see is truly what they get. Bear will continue to be outgoing and playful, while Rufus will remain the affectionate couch companion he has always been.

Until the right family comes along, Helen Woodward Animal Center will continue to care for Rufus and Bear. Everyone at the Center simply hopes that family finds them sooner rather than later, because after everything they've been through, these two deserving brothers have waited long enough for their happy ending.
