Californians are known for practicing a variety of healthy habits that have yet to be fully adopted by a handful of states. Good food, and fitness practices, in addition to ample green space and quality healthcare, help land these California cities on the list of the healthiest places to live in the entire country.

According to a list compiled by Advisory Board, the healthiest cites in California are San Francisco, San Diego, and Irvine. These cities also ranked among the top 10 healthiest cities in the entire country. Other cities on the list include Honolulu, Hawaii, Seattle, Washington, Washington D.C., Portland, Oregon, Denver, Colorado, Salt Lake City, Utah, and last but not least, Scottsdale, Arizona.

On the other side of things, there are 10 extremely unhealthy cities scattered throughout the U.S. These cities include Brownsville, Texas, Gulfport, Mississippi, Laredo, Texas, Columbus, Georgia, Shreveport, Louisiana, Augusta, Georgia, Fayetteville, North Carolina, Corpus Christi, Texas, Detroit, Michigan, and Huntington, West Virginia.

Using data sourced from Wallethub, Advisory Board listed the four factors that were used to discover the healthiest and unhealthiest places to live across the country:

  • Healthcare, which includes premature death rates, both adult and youth health insurance coverage, and mental health (25 points)
  • Food, which includes residents who say they eat healthy, inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption, and limited access to healthy foods (25 points)
  • Fitness, which includes share of adults who engage in any physical activity, as well as fitness and instruction centers per capita (25 points)
  • Green space, which includes parkland acres per capita, quality of parks, and city "greenness" (25 points)
