A closed high school in Oceanside will soon be the new site of a year-round homeless shelter, reports CBS8.
The site, located at the now-closed Ocean Shores High School, will have 50 beds, and city leaders believe it will be a great help to those experiencing homelessness in the area.
"It would be a great idea. It would take a lot of people off the streets, provide opportunities to a lot of homeless who are in a tough situation," one resident Raheem Gilliam told CBS8.
Oceanside City Council members chose the San Diego Rescue Mission to run the new year-round shelter. Millions have been invested into the project and city council member Pete Weiss said this will be a way to finally offer help to people who need it.
"... there are as many solutions to homeless issues as there are individual homeless people. Therein lies the problem - each one has their own story. We are trying to find a way to get those individuals into some type of program and get better essentially," said Weiss.
The shelter is currently in progress and will take about 9-12 months before it's up and running.
Weiss said there may be additional beds at the shelter in the future.
