An off-duty Dallas police officer shot his own son after mistaking him for an intruder. The officer, who has not been identified, pulled into the driveway of his home in Desoto and noticed the garage door was open. He went inside to investigate and shot his adult son in the arm.
When he realized his mistake, he immediately called 911 and explained the situation. The officer's son was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Officials say they do not plan to charge the man for the shooting. They did not say if he used his service weapon.
"It was a mistake. He thought that there might have been an intruder in the house. He didn't know who was supposed to be there and so forth," Officer Pete Schulte said. "It was a startling situation, it was an accident."
