Join us on Saturday, October 29th from 3:00pm to 8:00pm as Downtown Chula Vista transforms into a beautiful and lively, cempacuchil filled celebration for the 2nd Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration!

After lots of anticipation, Downtown Chula Vista is going above and beyond to celebrate the long-awaited 2nd Annual Día De Los Muertos Celebration from 3:00pm-8:00pm on Saturday, October 29th. Known as the biggest Día De Los Muertos Celebration in the South Bay, this free community event will feature live music, an altar and Catrín/Catrina ensemble competition, face painting, beautiful flower arrangements from Tallo and Pan de Muerto from Dulcet, and a special screening of Disney Pixar’s Coco beginning at 7:00pm for the entire family to enjoy. Taking place in the heart of Downtown Chula Vista, Memorial Park will be transformed into a place to honor deceased ancestors and welcome them back as memories. Throughout the evening, members of the community will also get the chance to participate in two main competitions, an altar-building and Catrín ensemble competition, to win cash prizes ranging from $150 to $1000.

This free community event will include fun for the entire family and is a great way for the community to come together to honor our loved ones that have passed, while still celebrating life. The celebration includes a community altar, an Altar Contest and Catrín/Catrína Ensemble Contest for cash prizes, music and dance performances from three different locations, kids crafts, treats, delicious food, vendors, themed photo opps throughout the neighborhood and a special screening of Disney Pixar’s COCO in the Memorial Bowl starting at 7:00pm!

  • Altar Contest - This year’s free celebration includes an Altar Contest with three different categories (Best Altar Created by School/Students, Best Altar Created by General Public & Best Overall Altar) with a cash prize of $500 each for School/Students and General Public and a $1,000 cash prize for Best Overall. More info and application
  • Catrín Ensemble Contest - Guests are also encouraged to dress up in traditional Catrín attire or put their own twist on the traditional look, the best and most creative look will also take home a cash prize ranging from $150 to $500! The categories for the contest include Best Chico (12 and under), Best Catrín (Male), Best Catrína (Female), and Best Couple (Pair).   More info and application
  • Community Altar - As a way to honor our community members that have passed, we will have a community altar for attendees to bring photos of loved ones who have passed and place them on the community altar or pin them to the 12’ Catrína located at the corner Third and Davidson. A holiday meant to bring the community together through love, this event is not only reminiscing those who aren’t with us anymore but celebrating the life that they lived. We encourage guests to bring copies of their photos so as not to damage originals.
  • Kids Activations - In addition to face painting for the entire family, kids will be able to stop by the craft booths to create their own special Día de los Muertos keepsake, and enjoy a free screening of Disney Pixar’s COCO.
  • Disney Pixar’s COCO Screening - Bring your warmest blankets, chairs, and pups to end the Día de los Muertos Celebration by watching Disney Pixar’s COCO. The screening of the film will begin at 7:00pm. Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drinks, or purchase from the local vendors at the event to enjoy while watching the film.
