Celebrate Early Literacy at the 5th Annual Talk, Read, Sing Day
Channel 933, Geena The Latina, First 5 San Diego, the County’s organization that promotes the health and well-being of young children during their most formative years, and The Dr. Seuss Foundation, a champion of childhood literacy, are inviting families across San Diego County to a whimsical afternoon of learning, laughter, and literacy at the 5th Annual Talk, Read, Sing Day on Sunday, June 8, 2025, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the City Heights/Weingart Library.
“Talk, Read, Sing has always been a cornerstone of our work because it offers families simple, everyday activities that have a profound impact on early brain development and long-term success,” said Alethea Arguilez, Executive Director of First 5 San Diego. “This year we are thrilled to have The Dr. Seuss Foundation join us to support this mission. Their legacy of inspiring young readers aligns perfectly with our goal that all children, ages 0 through 5 are safe, healthy, actively learning, and embrace by loving families and supportive communities.”
This free, family-friendly event will include:
- A FREE book giveaway (while supplies last)
- Opportunity to win tickets to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the New Children’s Museum
- Bilingual story time of a beloved Dr. Seuss book, read by Channel 93.3’s Geena The Latina
- A special appearance by the Cat in the Hat and Odi the Coyote
- Hands-on literacy crafts and fun activities
- A family engagement zone with take-home resources
- Remarks from local leaders and literacy advocates
This year’s celebration also marks the launch of “Talk, Read, Sing with Dr. Seuss,” a new regional campaign powered by the partnership between First 5 San Diego and The Dr. Seuss Foundation. As part of the effort, more than 10,000 books are being provided for the First 5 First Steps home visiting program through generous support from Dr. Seuss. Participating families will receive a new book during each visit from their Family Support Specialist—creating joyful, literacy-rich experiences at home.
“At The Dr. Seuss Foundation, we believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up with a love of reading and learning,” said Jay Hill, Executive Director of The Dr. Seuss Foundation. “Through this collaboration, we’re bringing the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss to life in homes across San Diego County—helping families discover the joy and lifelong impact of talking, reading, and singing together.”
In 2021, the County of San Diego officially proclaimed June 8 as Talk, Read, Sing Day in recognition of First 5 San Diego’s efforts to promote early literacy and learning. Research consistently shows that children ages 0 to 5 benefit greatly from regular exposure to language-rich interactions like talking, reading, and singing. These experiences build critical brain connections that support early learning, communication, and social-emotional development. First 5 San Diego’s programs and tools are tailored to empower parents, caregivers, and educators to give young children the strongest possible start in life.
