New San Diego Football Team

San Diego was awarded a team in the Alliance of American Football and set to begin playing on Feb. 9, 2019

The new team will play at SDCCU Stadium on February 9, 2019. Former St. Louis Rams coach, Mike Martz, who is also a graduate of James Madison High School, will be the team's coach.

The other cities to be awarded teams are Atlanta, Memphis, Tennessee, Orlando, Florida, Phoenix and Salt Lake City.

The Alliance of American Football is an eight-team league founded by former NFL executive Bill Polian, and television and movie producer Charlie Ebersol, son of Dick Ebersol and actress Susan Saint James. The eight teams in the Alliance of American Football league will be owned and operated under a single-entity, instead of being owned separately like NFL teams.

Fans will be able to watch the games on CBS, CBS Sports Network, and stream the games via a free app, which will also include fantasy options with rewards.

The Alliance of American Football league will be staffed by former NFL players and will have a focus on increased player safety. Another unique feature of the league is that the games do not have kickoffs, instead, teams start with the ball on their own 25-yard lines to start a game after each score or quarter.
