Oakland A’s Coach Apologizes for ‘Unintentionally’ Using Racist Gesture

The Oakland A’s bench coach, Ryan Christenson was recently in hot water after throwing up a Nazi salute twice during Thursday’s game against the Rangers. In the video below you can see A’s pitcher Liam Hendricks attempt to correct Christenson’s salute into an elbow bump position. 

Christenson went on the record to apologize for his act and attributed his tragic mistake to the current Coronavirus pandemic:

“Today in the dugout I greeted players with a gesture that was offensive. In the world today I adapted our elbow bump, which we do after wins, to create some distance with the players. My gesture unintentionally resulted in a racist and horrible salute that I do not believe in. What I did is unacceptable and I deeply apologize” 

The Oakland A’s also issued their own statement, where they apologized and acknowledged that Christenson’s gesture did in fact look like a salute:
