Spongebob Painting Sells for $1.3 Million USD at Auction

A SpongeBob painting by artist KAWS sold for $1.3 million USD at Sotheby's in London

There was a bidding war once it reached around $900,000. The price just kept going up. All that for the chance to own a painting of SpongeBob Square Pants.

The painting was done in 2008 by KAWS AKA Brian Donnelly. Donnelly is an artist based out of New York who is known for his limited edition toys and clothing. His work has also been featured in museums around the world. His past work included graffiti art in the 90s. He later created art for brands like A Bathing Ape, Original Fake, Kung Faux, Nike, Vans and more. In the 2000s he started remixing characters from shows like The Simpsons, SpongeBob Square Pants, the Smurfs, Mickey Mouse, and more.

The Sotheby's bid price was a record for KAWS.
