Customers were stuck in line after the cash registers had a technical failure. It was going to be at least an hour before the registers were back up. The supermarket instead allowed everyone to go home with their groceries for FREE
Customers at the Hannaford supermarket in West Lebanon, New Hamshire were able to turn lemons into lemonade when the cash registers failed. Do you make your 50 or so customers wait in line for an hour while they try to figure out what to do with the cash registers? Store manager Shawn Quelch had to make a decision... and fast. He ended up allowing the shoppers who were in line to walk out of the store with cartloads of FREE stuff around 2 PM... about $3000 - $5000 worth.
"The last thing we wanted was for our customers to be waiting for the hour that it was going to take for that to come back up," he said. "So we kind of made the decision to just let those folks have the groceries they had selected and be on their way."
