Photo of Couple Having Sex on Great Pyramid Sparks Outrage, Investigation

A Danish photographer and an unidentified model have sparked outrage after they apparently took a photo while having sex on top of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The photo and accompanying video of Andreas Hvid's stunt have prompted Egypt's Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Anany to get involved, ordering prosecutors to investigate the validity of Hvid's photo and whether the Danish photographer and the model really did film "an explicit pornographic video atop the Pyramid."

Egypt forbids tourists from climbing on the pyramids of Giza above a certain level, with the entire site closed down to the public by 5 p.m. The area is also heavily patrolled by police officers. The Great Pyramid stands at around 480 feet tall, and is the only surviving structure of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Hvid told Ekstrabladet, a Danish newspaper, that he had the idea for the photo years ago and had been obsessed with taking it and planned to make it happen. He got his chance in November when he and a model friend decided to move forward with the stunt.

According to Hvid, he and the woman snuck into the area far away from where the pyramids are located, slowly making their way there, all while avoiding patrols by police. At one point, the pair hid in a temple for an hour-and-a-half, Hvid said, while they waited for guards to pass.

Once they made it to the monument, they began scaling it, which took just under a half-hour, Hvid said. The Danish photographer described the feeling of reaching the top as "euphoric" with with a "magical" view of Cairo.

Hvid also posted video of them scaling the pyramid, which shows the pair quietly climbing the monument at night. The video ends as the woman Hvid is with, takes her shirt off, looking down at the view of the city below.

Hvid says that's when they staged the uh... photo.

Reaction to Hvid's photo was mixed, with people offended on multiple fronts. Comments on the YouTube video

"Shame. lack of respect for an ancient civilization."

"we really should start banning this tourists from our country they have no respect for history or anything"

"Art !? you call this art ?! zero concept+ zero talent+ zero edit skills+ just pure disrespect for the Egyptian culture and heritage ! I really Reaaally hope they catch you  you talent-less criminal."

For his part, Hvid says the photos are real and he's going stay "out of Egypt in the future, as I probably risk being [arrested] if I go back."
