Selena Gomez is reminding us once again that she will not fall victim to society's perception of beauty, as per her new Instagram video, which was posted on Tuesday afternoon (March 20) and soundtracked to Alvvays' empowerment anthem, "Dreams Tonite."
"The beauty myth- an obsession with physical perfection that traps modern woman in an endless cycle of hopelessness, self consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society’s impossible definition of flawless beauty," she captioned the clip, which features a vintage filter atop some footage of her recent yacht trip in Syndey. "I chose to take care of myself because I want to, not to prove anything to anyone. Wind in her sails."
Gomez's post was prompted by the extreme coverage and critique of the paparazzo photos of her in a bikini. Still, it wasn't just the sight of the pop star showing some skin as much as it was the first reveal of her kidney transplant complication scar. We've seen her initial stomach scar during her Instagram announcement for the surgery in September 2017, but this was another sight from the secret procedure that was performed due to her Lupus diagnosis.
"A few hours after our surgery, I woke up and had a text from her that said, 'I'm really scared,'" her best friend Francia Raisa, who donated her the organ, recently recalled to W Magazine. "My kidney was very active, and when it turned, I broke an artery. They had to take her into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney in place. She could have died."
