If you think your PDA is spontaneous, it may be time to examine your motives more closely. In a new research, scientists ask more than 300 college students about their PDA habits. One third of participants admitted to "performative making out" in the past. Most guys admitted to doing it to enhance their image or look good in front of their competition. Other guys said making out was about proving their relationship status and ensuring everyone else knows their date is "off limits."
Women, on the other hand, said they made out publicly with men to make other people jealous, and macked it with other women in order to seem sexually adventurous or get other men's attention. Women were concerned PDA would have a negative impact on their reputation, but men did not share that worry.
