Review: If you haven’t watched 300 before, don’t worry! You won’t need to in order to understand 300: Rise Of An Empire because it’s a side story of the previous installment. Instead of following the Spartans, this film explores the Athenian’s perspective of the war against the Persian Empire ruled by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro). The Greek navy fleet led by General Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) is the country’s last hope in winning this feud. However, the biggest obstacle in doing so is the vengeful Persian navy commander, Artemesia (Eva Green), who can really kick some booty! Countless stories have been told and retold of this war, so there is not anything new to expect in the story line. But you can count on expecting the same awe-inspiring visual standards that 300 had previously set: tons of slow-motion shots and gory imagery, which I like to phrase as “matrix gore”.
I give 300: Rise Of An Empire one thumbs up. Although I was not impressed with the story plot, it does not hurt to see muscle-rippling guys up close and personal.
