Eminem's second headlining set at Coachella 2018 was an extra special one for the hip-hop heavyweight as it also marked the 10-year milestone of his sobriety.
On Sunday (April 22), the 45-year-old rapper took to Instagram to share a photo of himself holding a gold recovery medallion with a Roman numeral X and the words "service," "recovery" and "unity" written on it. "Celebrated my 10 years yesterday," he captioned the shot, which has garnered over 1.6 million likes. Back in 2010, the rapper opened up to The New York Times about his struggle with addiction. "I used to get pills wherever I could. I was just taking anything that anybody was giving me," he revealed. Those pills included Vicodin, Valium, Ambien and methadone.
In case you forgot, Eminem nearly died from an accidental overdose in 2007 and checked himself into rehab the following year. He was 230 pounds at the time and turned to exercise as a way to cope. "When I got out of rehab, I needed to lose weight, but I also needed to figure out a way to function sober," the rapper told Men's Journal in 2015. "Unless I was blitzed out of my mind, I had trouble sleeping. So I started running. It gave me a natural endorphin high, but it also helped me sleep, so it was perfect. It’s easy to understand how people replace addiction with exercise."
Congrats are in order to you, Slim Shady. Keep up all the hard work!
