Unfortunately, Meek Mill will remain in prison for the time being. Judge Genece Brinkley decided to deny his request for release on bail.
TMZ reports that the judge "didn't give reasons for her decision, but it came amidst pressure to open the prison doors for the rapper ... who has been in prison since November for a probation violation. Meek's team has argued Judge Brinkley is biased and bears a grudge against him." If you can recall, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner already said that Meek shouldn't be serving time for probation violation, which stems from a case that took place many years ago. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf also agreed with this.
Meek's lawyer, Joe Tacopina, issued a statement to TMZ about the new ruling. He said, "This ruling from Judge Genece Brinkley simply reaffirms the fact she has turned Meek Mill's case into a personal vendetta."
The attorney continued: "In spite of the recommendations from the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, which was supported by Governor Tom Wolf, the judge continues to stand alone in supporting Officer Reginald Graham's perjured testimony as well as his criminal behavior that has been documented."
In court documents, Brinkley also claims that there is no reason for her to be removed from Meek's case and there's no evidence of bias or foul play on her part, which is contrary to what Meek's team says. "She also defends Meek's 2-4 year sentence, saying it was his 5th probation violation, he'd admitted drug use and failed to adhere to travel protocol," TMZ adds.
The rapper's attorney is appealing this ruling to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
